This animated short film was made by celebrated newspaper comic strip artist Winsor McCay. It follows the fitful imaginings of a dreamer who has eaten too much Welsh rarebit (a melted cheese mixture on toast) too close to bedtime. Made 12 years before King Kong stormed through Manhattan, Dreams of a Rarebit Fiend similarly features a gigantic creature — this time a mysterious animal adopted as a pet by an unsuspecting couple — that wreaks devastation upon a city. Armed forces are brought in to combat the oblivious monster and the climactic scene features planes bombarding the creature as it destroys buildings.
