  Film stills: Man's Genesis (1912)

Set in the early twentieth century, Man’s Genesis is a prehistoric morality tale in which the good guy gets the girl. The story loosely dramatises Darwinian notions of survival of the fittest, depicting the superiority of the hairless over the hairy, of brains over brawn. Man’s Genesis is one of more than 450 short film experiments supervised by DW Griffith, whose work contributed substantially to the early development of film through his innovative experiments with close-ups, cross-cutting camera movements and other temporal and spatial effects.
