Film title and details: Tarzan of the Apes (1918)
Film stills: Tarzan of the apes (1918)

As the first Tarzan film, Tarzan of the Apes is the most faithful to Edgar Rice Burroughs’s novel of 1914. The son of British aristocrats marooned in Africa in the late nineteenth century, the young Tarzan is adopted by a great ape following the death of his parents. A curious scientist and his daughter Jane travel to the region after hearing of the now adult Tarzan. When the natives kidnap Jane, Tarzan comes to the rescue, strengthening the apeman’s relationship with his white ancestry.
