Mighty Joe Young is Cooper and Schoedsack’s third variation on the cross-cultural exploitations of the original Kong story. Max O’Hara (Robert Armstrong, who played Carl Denham in the original King Kong) discovers a large gorilla, Joe Young, while searching the wilds of Africa for authentic acts for The Golden Safari, O’Hara’s Los Angeles nightclub. The gorilla is pacified by the beautiful young Jill (Terry Moore), who is convinced by O’Hara to bring Joe to America for a more glamorous life of fun and profit. Joe, however, is not pleased with his new life as a nightclub act and soon rampages through The Golden Safari’s fake palms, natives and caged lions.
