Film title and details: Island of Lost Souls (1932)
Film stills: Island of lost souls (1932)

Adapted from HG Wells’s The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), the film was banned in Britain until the 1960s, possibly because of its implied criticism of colonisation. After a misadventure at sea, Edward Parker (Richard Arlen) is brought to the isolated island domain of Doctor Moreau (Charles Laughton) and his assistant Montgomery (Arthur Hohl). Moreau introduces the young man to his captivating daughter Lota and the secrets of the island start to unfold. He soon discovers that the doctor is conducting experiments in accelerated evolution and that the strange creatures on the island are of his making. Best known for his role as Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), Charles Laughton delivers a brilliant performance as the maniacal Dr Moreau.
