| Tarzan the Ape Man is the first MGM Tarzan talkie. Shot over five months at MGM studios in California, the film uses extensive rear-projected jungle footage from MGM's early adventure film Trader Horn (1931). The film’s popularity and longevity can be attributed to its unsubtle Oedipal subtexts, its eager embrace of taboo topics and its interestingly ambivalent treatment of the values of Western civilisation. Jane’s apparent liberation within Tarzan’s domain has attracted some attention from feminist critics. The famous line, ‘Me Tarzan, you Jane’ derives from Johnny Wiessmuller’s Tarzan in this film, but he actually says ‘Tarzan, Jane’, amidst much prodding and poking.
