Bride of the Monster’s B-grade props and sets are as infamous as Bela Lugosi’s characterisation of its villain, renegade Soviet scientist Dr Eric Vornoff. ‘You will be soon as bigk as a chjiant! De strengt of tventy men’, Varnoff spits over one of his subjects, fitted out in a kitchen colander helmet, as he adjusts his radiation machine made from a photo enlarger and oscilloscope, ‘or, like all de otters . . . det!’. Dr Vornoff’s ghastly experiments on unfortunate locals are assisted by a bald goon, Lobo (Swedish wrestler Tor Johnson) and a lake-dwelling giant rubber octopus, which previously starred alongside John Wayne in Lake of the Red Witch (1948).
