Director James Whale’s compassionate, witty and macabre Frankenstein sequel pushes the limits of the horror genre. Frankenstein’s monster (Boris Karloff) has survived the burning mill finale of the 1931 Frankenstein. A spectre from Dr Frankenstein’s past instructs the monster to kidnap his maker’s fiancée, forcing the doctor to start work on a new creation — a ‘bride’ for his monster. The bride, however, does not behave as expected by her makers. With its high production values and Gothic charm, Bride of Frankenstein is widely celebrated as the most intelligently realised and eccentric of Universal’s Frankenstein features.
