Film title and details: Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1931)
Film stills: Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1931)

This film adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novel is regarded by horror writer Steven King as a prototype for all horror films, using techniques such as 360-degree pans to show the protagonist’s double-identity mindscape, and innovative lighting during the Jekyll to Hyde transformations. Like Universal’s Frankenstein of the same year, the film is a cautionary tale on the dangers of scientific experimentation. It also equates sexual desire with the less-evolved state of the ape-like Hyde.
