Film title and details: Frankenstein (1931)
  Film stills: Frankenstein (1931)

Boris Karloff is Frankenstein’s monster in this 1931 Universal Studios production. With his bolted lobes and undersized suit, the image of Karloff’s character is today emblematic of the Frankenstein story. Sets influenced by German Expressionism and reminiscent of Robert Wiene’s The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1919) and Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (1927), lend the production a distinct theatricality. Key scenes including Frankenstein’s blasphemous exclamation ‘Now I know what it’s like to be God!’, and the murder of a young girl, were cut by international and US censor bodies, only to be restored in 1985.
