Film title and details: Charleston (1927)
Film stills: Sur un air de Charleston (1927)

Sur un air de Charleston is a rare, playful piece of reverse ethnography featuring delightful special effects. An African explorer (Johnny Huggins) travels in a silver ball and lands on the streets of a post-apocalyptic Paris. There he discovers a young woman (Catherine Hessling), who roams the streets with an ape-like creature. The woman reveals her native customs to the explorer, performing a Charleston dance in which he gleefully participates. The sublime slow-motion photography in this sensual dance sequence is not to be missed. The film has been restored by the Cinémathèque Francaise to inculde its original French intertitles.
