King Kong Escapes, from the director of Godzilla, is classic kaiju (a popular Japanese term referring to monsters) kitsch. Mad scientist Dr Who, played by Eisei Amamoto (a well-loved bit-part villain), builds a giant robotic Kong to mine plutonium. The Robo-Kong fails and the doctor is forced to kidnap the real King Kong to continue his project. Inevitably, Kong is too wild and he breaks loose and makes for Tokyo. The Robo-Kong is sent after his namesake towards a climatic showdown in which not one, but two Kongs precariously cling to the top of Tokyo Tower.
